Top Home Businesses: Exercise Some Self Discipline

Sunday, September 28th, 2008
Mike Muir asked:

Most home businesses fail before the end of their first year, due to a lack of preparation, Market Research, but most commonly because of a lack of self-discipline.

In reality, a very common cause of failure is simply a lack of self-discipline. Most business owners leave some form of employment before embarking on their dream of self-employment, and a possible motivation might well be to escape from the perceived injustice of a former boss. It is only human, having left permanent employment, to slip into a too relaxed mode.

This reaction could easily be the cause of downfall! We have discussed in an earlier series of articles the vital importance of clarifying one’s motivation for embarking on a home business. A tough boss is seldom very popular, but at least he provides some motivation to get the work done. If there is no driving-force or motivation, the result could easily be failure.

Be clear in your own mind why you are going it alone, and understand how important it is to you personally to succeed. Thus when the temptation is to “take the day off” be sure that this is for a good reason and make a personal decision to make up the time lost.

Some ideas which may be helpful to you in establishing your business on a sound footing as soon as possible:

- Try to make it a habit to work regular hours. Make a set time every morning to read and respond to e-mails and other correspondence. You should check again later in the day to deal with anything urgent that needs your attention.

- Try also to respond promptly to queries.

- Don’t even have your television turned on during your “working hours.” It’s too easy to be distracted by a sports programme or other interesting item.

- Remind family members and friends that although you’re working from home, you’re still working! Long personal telephone calls can break your concentration and waste your time. Suggest tactfully that the best time to contact you is between certain hours when you’re not busy at your computer.

- It is extremely difficult to handle the demands of small children at home, whilst you are trying to run a business. There is another article coming soon, aimed at helping the “home-biz Mum” to find ways around this very real problem.

Until a more lasting solution is available, try at least to reduce the amount of noise and distraction. A solution might be to tackle your most technical tasks, when the children are temporarily in someone else’s care.

In essence, it’s vital to treat your business with commitment and determination. Your personal circumstances will have a significant influence on the success or otherwise of your home business. Should you be able only to devote limited time and effort to it, you must expect your results to reflect this.

It is most unlikely that you will be able to enjoy a full-time income from a part-time business, at least until you have been able to develop your business to a stage where many functions operate “on auto-pilot.” Some highly successful owners of top home businesses are eventually able to make huge incomes while working part-time, but this takes considerable time and skill to achieve.

In our next article in this series we look at how to set, and manage some business targets.

It is important to know what your reason is for wanting a home business because this will be your motivation to reach your goal of a successful work at home business. Here are some common reasons why people all over the world are starting a business at home.

One: Being your own boss is a big reason. No one will be telling you what to do or when to do it. Plus, you get to decide when to take a vacation, when to work, and so on. When you go to work everyday you do not have this kind of freedom.

Two: You get to control how much money your home business will make. There is no limit on how much you can make when you have a home business. The only thing that will stop you from making the kind of money you want to make is you not working hard to make your business successful. Financial freedom is a very real possibility, especially if your business is an internet home business.

Three: You will save time and money every day. No more commuting back and forth and paying for all that expensive gas. There are others ways you can save money too such as on lunches.

Four: One really big reason that so many people are starting work at home businesses are to have a lot more time to spend with your family. When you work at job every day you are limited on the amount of time you get to spend with your loved ones. Working at home gives you the chance to have a lot more time to be with them.

These are not all of the reasons why so many people are starting work at home businesses but they are the most common ones. You are the only one that needs to know your reason. So figure out what it is before you start your home business. If you do that then you will have motivation to help you make your business a success.

Home Businesses

Ruth Jacob asked:

The Government has announced that it is endeavouring to encourage flexible working for families, including inspiring people to set up businesses in the houses and work from home.

However, for workers who are interested in setting up businesses within their houses, they will need to ensure, that they have sufficient home insurance to cover the projects that could take place in their homes.

This comes after recent news reports, have stated that 90 per cent of business, will allow for flexible working conditions, for their workers who have young children.

Direct Line for Businesses, works to provide home insurance policies, specifically for businesses set up from homes.  Features of their policies include, a 24 hour advice line for emergency assistance and legal advice.

Kate Syred, Head of Direct Line for Business, spoke about the Government’s aim towards encouraging flexible working conditions for families.

Syred said: “The Government is proposing several initiatives to encourage parents to improve their work-life balance, including setting up their own business.

She continued: “People who are setting up their own businesses from home should be aware that they may not be covered by their home contents insurance.  Most home policies exclude business conducted at home.  We suggest that aspiring entrepreneurs review their insurance policies as they may need a home business policy which covers product and public liability plus theft or accidental damage to stock or specialist equipment.

She concluded: “Without the relevant insurance, home businesses will not be covered for business lost as a result of an incident in the home.  People should also be aware of their liability to their clients for the products and services they provide.”

Guy Mendelson asked:

If you are reading this right now you are on the Internet. That is exactly why a home based business work from home business opportunity, using the Internet, makes perfect sense. In this article we are going to take a look at five reasons why selling anything online is a great way to make money from home.

1. 30 Second Commute

We talked about 30 second commute, because that’s really how long it takes to walk for your bedroom to your computer. This is just a figure of speech, but it really drives home the point that you do not have to get in your car and drive to work anymore.

As traffic gets worse you can spend a considerable amount of time just getting to work and getting home. This is time you are not getting paid for and time you save when you work for yourself at home.

2. Easy For Your Customers

When you sell things on the Internet you’re making it easy for your customers to buy. They do not have to get in their car and drive to the store. The do not have to dial up and order on the phone. They do not have to mail in anything to place and order.

They can just click surf, pick what they want order, and be all done in a matter of a few minutes. People of all ages are now used to ordering online and it will only grow in potential business for internet marketers.

3. Quick Delivery

When you make it easy for your customer to order you’re also making it quicker for them to receive the product. Quick delivery is one of the many benefits a home-based business work from home business opportunity offers, not only to you, but your customers thanks to the Internet.

4. Low Overhead

When you can run a business from home, you don’t have to pay the overhead that a traditional brick-and-mortar business has. Things such as rent, insurance, employees, and these sort of things. You can sit at home, log on the internet, and be in business.

5. High Profit

The really bottom-line benefit from a work at home business opportunity is that you can achieve a very high profit. This is because of the many reasons that we just mentioned before. They all play a part of having lower overhead and being able to sell products that are quick to deliver.

Your profit increases because you keep more of the money you are selling your products and services for. Ultimately this is why a home based business work from home business opportunity online makes perfect sense.

Home Business Tips: the Top 10

Thursday, September 4th, 2008
Alan Thomas asked:

your daily routine can often be a major stumbling block to your success in a work at home business. With this in mind, I will give you what I consider to be the top 10 home business tips. Many of these tips were given to me in my early days online, and became the building blocks on which my business was built.

1. Create a daily to-do list and attack it just like you would a full-time job. You will get more done in your work at home business and it will be more profitable in the long run because of everything you accomplish on a daily basis.

2. Sell profitable products. The whole point of building your home business is to boost your income, so there is little to be gained if you can’t make money with it. You want to sell products that there are need for and that people are currently spending money on. You also need to make plenty of money on each sale!

3. Utilize the Internet to promote your business. For this we suggest you have a website, a landing page, and a blog. You will want to spend some time learning how to utilize these three things to build your work at home business.

4. At every available opportunity you should be using email marketing. For this you should use an auto responder and put a contact form on every web page and on your landing page as well. The auto responder is how you will follow-up with people and building a large list is an asset you can make you money for many years to come.

5. Learn how to do social networking a least one way. You can get bogged down with social networking with all the different directories, networks, and so on that you can join. One thing that we like is Twitter.com and you can use this great vehicle to develop followers and good friends through your top 10 home business tips.

6. Focus on one home business initially. The Internet makes it very easy to get started with a home business, and when you are working at home you want to focus your efforts on making money at least one way before you branch out into another.

7. Learn how to do one form of traffic generation until you are an expert at it. Whether you determine to do pay per click advertising, traffic exchanges, article marketing, forum marketing, or so on, you must become an expert at getting traffic at least one way.

8. Build backlinks to your work at home website at every opportunity. The more quality links you have, the higher your site will be ranked with search engines.

9. Set goals on a monthly basis, preferably with someone more experienced than you who will hold you accountable to yourself. At the end of the month, review your goals, and see how you can adjust your activity the next month to improve your overall results.

10. Keep it fun! Improving your lifestyle is one of the key benefits in building a work at home business. Although you should plan your work and work your plan, if you are not enjoying yourself, people will notice, and they will be less likely to work with you.

These are the top 10 home business tips that can definitely make your business operate more smoothly and can make you more money as well.

What You Need to Know About Home Business Affiliate Marketing

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008
Alexander Gorbachev asked:

Well you have finally done it. You have packed in the rubbish job and told your boss exactly what you think. You have taken the plunge and made the decision to begin your own home business affiliate marketing. Home business affiliate marketing can be very lucrative. It provides people with the opportunity to work for themselves with very little risk to them. Those that are sales savvy, good at marketing and are not afraid of a little hard work can often do incredibly well with a home business affiliate marketing program.

Home business affiliate marketing sounds easy but you do need to exercise some caution. You want to avoid the home business affiliate marketing pitfalls that can ruin your home business and worse, have you crawling on your hands and knees back to that boss that now knows how you truly feel.

People tend to get excited when they start a new venture. Unfortunately this excitement and eagerness can cause them to miss key things in their agreement. Whenever you sign up for a home business affiliate marketing program, you will be expected to sign an agreement. The terms and conditions of the agreement for both sides should be outlined. However, if they want to hide something this is where they will put it. It will either be in the small print, so get your magnifying glass out, or they will baffle you with legal language. Either way, you need to read and understand your agreement thoroughly to avoid disappointment and lost earnings.

If you are signing up for a commission based home business affiliate marketing program then you need to understand how the term revenue is defined. This is one of the biggest pitfalls of the contracts. They may advertise 5-10% commissions but it all fall on how they define revenue. Most home business affiliate marketing programs will calculate commission on the gross value of the sale. In other words, the amount of money the site will get at the completion of the sale. You may think that this sounds great. However, you need to read this part of the agreement very carfully. The amount of the sale almost always excludes credit card or debit card payment surcharges. They also are likely to exclude payment and delivery charges as well as any gift wrapping or other surcharges. What sounded like a nice commission is soon shrinking before your eyes. Ask these questions specifically before you sign an agreement.

Some home business affiliate marketing programs are even stricter in their definition of revenue. Your commission may be based on the profit margin of the sold product. For example, if you help sell a book for 20 dollars but the company only makes 10 dollars profit, you will receive a percentage of 10 dollars not 20. This can make a substantial difference in your earnings. Again, make sure you understand these things and ask specifically what your commission will be based upon. Read your agreement and look out for odd sounding clauses. These could come back to haunt you later.

Something else to beware of when you work on commission is returns. Many home business affiliate marketing companies only pay commission out on completed sales and then only if the customer keeps the item. If they return the items your commission could be cancelled. To really rub salt in the wounds, you could be billed for the outstanding commission if you do not have sufficient commission credit built up. Make sure you understand this before signing on. You cannot expect a company to pay you a commission on an item that is returned but make sure you understand their return policy. Find out your rights in this situation.

Home business affiliate marketing can be a great way to earn money. If you have good sales and marketing skills then it can give you the opportunity to out them to good use. You will be able to work for yourself and not someone who undervalues and does not appreciate them. One needs to consider home business affiliate marketing carefully. Make sure you understand your agreement and exactly what you will be paid for. You do not want to have to go crawling back to your boss begging for your old job back.
